Statement
Dorothy Goode’s paintings explore the interplay between text, drawing, and gesture. Exploiting the translucence of egg tempera, she layers, then excavates, arcs of vibrant color atop sumi ink or graphite—a technique that integrates longstanding obsessions with line, literature, and the contrary impulses toward confession and obfuscation. Her work both celebrates and critiques the transcendental aims of Abstract Expressionism, the grittiness of 1980s-era graffiti art, and the splintered pastiche of contemporary times.
